Light Dark and Colour
Infants and Key Stage 1
Duration: 30 mins.
The children will have a new and exciting experience of Light and Dark , seeing the Key Stage 1 concepts of colours, rainbows, shadows and light, day and night brought to life for them within the darkness of the planetarium dome.
The interior of the dome is illuminated by a projector and coloured filters introduced into the light beam to demonstrate different coloured lights . The children are then asked what new colours will be made when the various filters are mixed together.
The colours of the rainbow are shown using a prism to split the (sun) beam of white light into the spectrum.
Coloured torches are used to show more colour mixing using red, blue and green. Finally a curved rainbow is produced on the side of the dome .
The topic of rainbows leads into the idea of the sun giving us light and shadows ( darkness), long and short shadows are demonstrated and the earth-ball used to show how day and night are caused as the Earth turns in the light of the Sun.
Slides of the Sun, Earth and Moon are shown.
The dome is darkened and the stars shown . The plough or 'saucepan' may be picked out.
The mythological figures in their constellations are then shown and some of the myths and legends associated with the major constellations told depending on time available etc.
